Little collection

People usually hold different ideas about collecting. Some collectors are even been thought as freak. In my opinion, collecting is a good habit and collectors are really cool.

"For a child, collecting represents the most rudimentary way to exercise control over the outer world: by laying things out, grouping them, handling them."(Jean Baudrillard, 1994 P.9)

I have watched a video about a woman named Kathy Libraty who collects doll for more than 25 years. The title is 2 Million Dollar Doll Collection. In the video, she showed us all of her collection which be sorted out into different sections. I astonished when i watching the video and wondering how can she get so many dolls and spent how much time on them. It is not only about such big amount of money but also the time she spent on those dolls. Dolls been arranged by the Kathy very carefully. She dress up dolls and photograph them. On the entrance way to kitchen, there is a big cabinet which displayed full of small dolls. Kathy does room setting for little dolls families or we can say different series of dolls. She set up doll house for different groups of doll separately.  It seems the lady created a wonderful little world of dolls she collected.

"This first function has to do with the subject's project of asserting practical control within the real world, the second with an enterprise of abstract mastery whereby the subject seeks to assert himself as an autonomous totality outside the world."(Jean Baudrillard, 1994 P.14)

It reminds me of a doll house exhibition in hammersmith hall last year. That was my first time to see so many such beautiful tiny house at once. A lot of people are keen to create a perfect world for their collected dolls.
I believe that people collecting things for some reasons. Maybe she is facing a big pressure in the real world or dolls means a lot in her lonely childhood. It might just simply explained as the lovely attractive appearance of dolls. We can list as many reasons as we can. I collect antique hats because i think they are delicate and the shape won't be produced again.
There is nothing wrong with collecting even through there are some strange collections. They still harmless. Collectors spent all their time and energy in built up their little world. So they won't create big trouble to our society unless they collect human body.
In the society today everything seems to be too disposable. The collectors treasure the items that seems disposable to normal eyes. Therefore i respect collectors a lot.

SUPERHUMAN

Device that Makes My Hand Bigger 1999

The photography above is an object created by South Korean artist Hyungkoo Lee. It seems like a device filled with water to enlarge a human hand. This is the first work done by Hyungkoo Lee in "The objectuals"series which also the one catch a lot of attention from people.
Lee created a series of strongly visual artworks which changed people's appearance of face in extreme forms.  He is so clever to expressed his ideas by using optical effects, water and vacuum of the device not changing the real human body.
Hyungkoo Lee's works pointed out the problems of ideal beauty of society. Especially the plastic surgery are getting overwhelmed nowadays. It seems everyone has a same criterion of beauty which like a mathematics formula.

Altering Features with RH5 2003

The girl in the photography above shows enormous eyes and a very small mouth. Of course the scary appearance was made by special device but it reminds me of those female celebrities in South Korean. They looks so dolly with big eyes small cheeks but they all looks same. So a lot of people think the inspiration of artist come from his own background. I  agree with that.
Everyone has their own imperfection. A question come to my mind. What is the standard of a real beauty or perfect body. Differences between human being make the world colourful and interesting. If all of us looks exactly the same and equip with a "perfect" body. Is that means the world belongs to a series of robots but not human.

Knit technical block

I am doing knit for this two weeks. I feel very frustrating when i first use knitting machine. Made some mistake like forgot to put the weight on. It took me a while to sort out the way i like to work. My knit samples are more 3D.
The two pictures above are my final samples for knit block. I learned how to knit triangle pattern and wave shape and combine the techinque with e-wrapping.

There is a lot of possibilities of knitting. Knit samples can become 3D structure easier than weave sample. I am very please with my knit block.

first technical block

Weave is my first technical block. I am so happy to study weave first. To me, weave is not very hard but interesting. We learn some basic knowledge of using loom and then develop our design works at the second week. The work in the photo above is what kind of things i done in the first week. Try to use different yarns, treads and looms and i can decide what kind of outcome i like most and how to achieve it.

The two final pieces in the above pictures were done by using block loom. During the second week i more likely to do repeating pattern and colour. I wish i can do longer pieces if there is one more week for us.

Rough Guide

Rough Guide is my first project in the university.  People been set in groups to different places in London. We use our own way to record the place. No matter the smell, views and sound. The subject of our group is piccadilly circus to oxford circus.
The idea of my rough guide is about the ground. To a person not born in london(tourists, international students, etc) the most interesting thing is how london combine the idea of history and fresh. How to bring the new style to such an old city. To me, ground is something show the internal part of a city. London is so stylish and care all the details including the ground. So i walked into every shop and took pictures of their carpet or wood and various materials.
After that i selected a page in my sketchbook which showing different ground picture of london with my shoes on it.

Final outcome of rough guide
I randomly cut out some pattern and out the picture i took underneath. It took me long time to do 90 pages but it is a lot of fun.
